Enabling 3D visualization with machine learning
Ingka Group, the largest IKEA franchisee, recently acquired Geomagical Labs, a spatial computing company, developing mixed reality (real + virtual) experiences to support consumer needs. Using an ordinary smartphone, consumers will be able to quickly capture their spaces and virtually play with IKEA products in their rooms before purchasing them.
Finding lines is critical to understand the shapes and contents of indoor spaces: wall seams, table edges and other key lines provide important information.
The software combines neural networks and computer vision techniques to locate and label key lines in the scene in both 2D & 3D.

You’ll start by capturing the space you wish to design. With any ordinary smartphone, an app will guide you to take an ultra-wide, "magazine quality", photo of your room. A parallax tolerant algorithm seamlessly stitches multiple images into an ultra-wide photo

Designing the space

Using Vision API Product Search, IKEA simplifies the return process throughout its different platforms. Google Cloud Product Search applies machine learning to compare and find the most similar item of all IKEA products. Employees at the return department at IKEA can quickly identify an item by taking a photo of them.
